Rudolph Whitt, age 91, passed away on Monday, October 8, 2012, at his home in Baptist Valley. Rudolph was born June 8, 1921, in Bandy, Virginia and later moved to Jewell Ridge where he spent his early adult years.

He is a veteran of World War II where he served with the U.S. Army 83rd Chemical Mortar Battalion in campaigns throughout the European Theater.

He was employed by Pocahontas Fuel Co. and was later owner and operator of Valley Grocery and Mobil Service Center in Baptist Valley for 24 years. He was a 50+ year member of Cedar Bluff Masonic Lodge #260 and served as treasurer for many years. He was a member of The Scottish Rites, a member of the Tazewell-Russell Shrine Club since 1967 and a member of the Legion of Honor. He was a 50+ year member of VFW Tazewell Barnes Beavers Post serving as chaplain for several years. He was a member of Richlands Presbyterian Church and a devoted civic volunteer.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Samuel Graham Whitt and Dolly Christian Whitt; five sisters, Georgia Taylor, Lois Morris, Daisy Sharp, Dollie Warburton and Pauline Rice; three brothers, Peyton Whitt, Howard Whitt and Samuel Whitt, Jr.

He is survived by his wife of 67 years, Bessie Blake Brown Whitt; daughter Rita and husband Joseph Matthews of Roanoke, VA; three granddaughters, Whitney and husband Joseph Ramseur of Greenville, SC, Doctors Ashley and husband Tanner Shilling of Charlottesville, VA, Bradley and husband Michael McLeod of Savannah, GA; five great-grandchildren, Mattie Blake Ramseur, Walker Ramseur, Channing Shilling, Whitt Shilling and Caroline McLeod; several nieces and nephews.

A celebration of Rudolph’s life will be on Thursday, October 11, 2012 at 2:00 P.M. at Singleton Funeral Service at Cedar Bluff, Virginia with Rev. Dennis Hoffman officiating. Interment will follow at Clinch Valley Memorial Mausoleum in Richlands, Virginia. Pallbearers will be the men of Richlands Presbyterian Church. Honorary pallbearers will be fellow Masons and Shriners. Barnes Beavers VFW Post #7136 will conduct military graveside rites.

Friends may visit with the family from 12:30 – 2:00 P.M. prior to the service at Singletons. Cedar Bluff Masonic Lodge #260 will conduct Masonic Rites at 2:00 P.M. Thursday.
